Everyone now knows that William (Bill) T Tutte was a mathematician and codebreaker of colossal achievement. However, he was a very shy and very private man. As one of his research students, Richard Steinberg spent a considerable amount of time with Bill Tutte near the end of his life, during which time Bill confided in him about a great many things. In this talk, Richard will discuss the personal side of Bill Tutte that few people know about.

Richard Steinberg is Chair in Operations Research at the London School of Economics. Previously, he has held positions at the University of Cambridge, Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and Bell Laboratories. He completed his PhD in Combinatorics and Optimization in 1979 at the University of Waterloo (Canada) under the direction of WT Tutte. His current research interests are in combinatorial auctions.

(The month of May 2020 marks the 103rd anniversary of Bill Tutte's birth and the 18th anniversary of his death.)
