Explore how artists and musicians can use new technologies to invent instruments, make new sounds and play with the world around them!

About This Event:

Make some noise with a musical glove - a wearable instrument that you can code and play! This practical, interactive STEAM workshop combines creativity, music, electronics and coding to inspire you to share your imagination with the world.

In this workshop, you will write a programme to play music/sounds on a BBC Micro:Bit, in response to gestures you make with your hand! This musical glove design takes inspiration from Imogen Heap's MiMU glove. You can watch the video below to find out more.

The BBC Micro:Bit is a powerful pocket-sized computer, featuring a variety of components, including an LED light display, buttons and sensors, that you can programme and physically interact with. During this workshop, you will write your programme using the Microsoft Makecode Editor and an easy to follow tutorial. Programming using colour-coded blocks will be familiar to Scratch users, whilst more advanced coders can switch to JavaScript to see the text-based code behind the blocks. You can view your completed programme on Microsoft Makecode's in-built Micro:Bit Emulator, before downloading it to a real Micro:Bit attached to your glove, combining your physical hand gestures with music!

• Children MUST be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the workshop.
