Schools Social Action Hackathon

  • The National Museum of Computing Block H, Bletchley Park Bletchley, England, MK3 6GX United Kingdom (map)

Create technological solutions to real-world problems in this role-playing game style competitive hackathon for schools.

About This Event:

We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer this exciting opportunity in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to coincide with their new Pop-Up Exhibition at The National Museum of Computing!

School teams of 4-5 students can participate online or in person and compete to create a technological solution that might benefit an important charity, or the people and communities that they support. This event is designed to feel like a role-playing game in which teams assume the part of a fledgling technology start-up; designing a product for a client to bring to market. Teams design and prototype their assistive technology through a process used all over the world in technology and software companies, known as agile development methodology.

Learners start by building programming confidence with short activities (basic understanding and competency are expected) to inspire creativity with available resources for assistive technologies. Teams will select a charitable call-to-action as the basis of their design brief.

Teams are handed a crate of Raspberry Pi computers, electronic components and construction materials and given free rein to create something awesome.
The fundamental principles of agile development are:
- Only work on the most important things at any given point in time
- Break those things into bite-sized tasks for individuals to work on autonomously
- Catch up regularly on progress to work out what is important now, and change your plan to adapt if you need to
- Start by making something simple that works, then add to it or change it into something better in several steps.

As their final task, teams will present their work to our panel of experts who will select the winning product.
This event is recommended for students in KS3-4. Teams of 4-5 students can attend on-site (where all kit is provided) or participate virtually (*a Raspberry Pi 4 is required). Schools can enter up to 3 teams, other learning groups are welcome!
