Wednesday 6th April 2022 marks 50 years since the foundation of Cray Research and the birth of the supercomputer industry. From the original innovation of the Cray-1, through multiple generations of machines, Cray branded supercomputers have driven innovation and discoveries in Science and Engineering. Delivered by Clive England, this virtual talk will explore the physical and logical structure of a Cray-1, peaking 'under the covers' of these remarkable machines. This talk will illuminate how these machines evolved and sample some of what was achieved using Cray supercomputers in the UK. Supercomputers have supported leading edge engineering and scientific research, helping to shape the modern world. The innovation, evolution and design of these supercomputers provokes an appreciation of the complexity of modern systems and STEM subjects.
About the Speaker:
Clive England worked on Cray Research supercomputers during the turbulent years of the 1990s when supercomputers were evolving from superfast processors to super capacity systems. As a software service engineer in a hardware company, he was involved in the installation, tuning and troubleshooting on these multi-million pound/dollar systems. Currently he is researching the broader history of Cray branded supercomputers.
