About This Event:
As a Museum, we strive to champion, support and enthuse young women in their pursuit of and engagement with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. Our International Women in Mathematics Day is an opportunity for female students to experience interactive, innovative and careers-focused hands-on activities and hear from leading inspirational women in the industry. The young women attending will be supported in realising their full potential and encouraged to consider careers in Mathematics.
Programme:
The AI Gambit: Climate Change (Elastacloud) - One of the most powerful applications data and AI technology is in the fight against climate change. The use of data to develop mathematical predictive models in a sustainable way ,using cloud technology, can unleash a dynamic and effective set of tools at our disposal. From better understanding climate change to solutions that allow us to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis through: predicting energy demand, understanding which chemical structures can better absorb carbon, developing robust electric vehicle charging infrastructure, educational tools, optimising supply chains, creating smarter buildings, improving agriculture at scale and so much more- the possibilities for innovation are limitless! On the flip side, it is also important to be aware of the carbon costs when training predictive models using compute-intensive resources. AI models can also exacerbate social and ethical challenges if not developed in a responsible way. During this session we will cover the basic development lifecycle of AI modelling, discover the range of applications of AI in sustainability and climate change and have a go through some interactive exercises at developing our own climate models.
Women in Computing Trail - Discover the inspirational achievements of past and present Women in Computing and explore their impact on the industry in this interactive museum exploration.
Data STEMinism - Explore statistics of Women working in STEM subjects over the last 50 years in this practical workshop. Build skills with spreadsheets, data analysis and data representation.
Beating Impossible Odds - Here we explore the fiendish complexity of the iconic Enigma machine to build an in-depth understanding of its machinations and the mathematical techniques used to break them.
