STEAM Family Half-Term Activities! Fun for the whole family

You will also have the opportunity to explore the whole museum as a family and be inspired by the hands-on demonstrations from our expert guides and volunteers.

We offer a variety of activities from Sphero Bolts and OSMO Augmented Reality to programming BBC Micros and BBC micro:bits!

So, lots to fascinate kids throughout the half term.

Our educational STEAM activities have become the go-to Milton Keynes event for children wanting creative fun during the school holidays and every weekend throughout the year. From OSMO, BBC micro:bits to Robotics kits, there is plenty to do to unlock imaginations, inspire and entertain. Educational fun for all the family, providing byte sized tasters of coding, robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality and much much more!

Please note that these hands-on activities are not drop-off events. Parental supervision is required at all times.

Each day consists of 3 drop in sessions spread throughout the day, leaving you time to explore the museum and enjoy all of the STEAM activities!

Session 1 - 11am-12:30pm - Programming

Programming on original 1980s BBC Micros - Go back in time to our 80s classroom and build an understanding of programming languages by creating customisable games on our original, working BBC Micros.

Musical Glove programming workshop with BBC Micro:Bits - The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer that you can code, customise and control to bring your digital ideas, games and apps to life. In this session, children can learn to code from pre-constructed challenges and tasks that are designed to promote logical, creative thinking. We have a range of challenges suitable for all ages.

Session 2 - 13:30pm - 14:30pm - Robots

Robotics with our Sphero Bolts - Packed with plenty of programmable sensors and a colorful LED light matrix, Sphero BOLT is paving the way for the next generation of coders. Our sphero bolts come with a fully programmable screen, 100% control over its every motion and programable sound effects!

The Basics of programming with Botley - Full of fun features and special codes, including light-up eyes for night vision, Botley 2.0 comes packed full of hands-on coding activities and challenges, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Session 3 - 15:30pm - 16:30pm - Virtual and Augmented Reality

Keep talking and nobody explodes, a teamwork Virtual Reality game - Build communication skills by collaboratively solving fast-paced problems requiring abstraction, decomposition and computational thinking. [Ages 12+]

Augmented reality with OSMO - Combine real game pieces with modern digital technology for interactive learning opportunities that require the use of all five senses in enhanced reality games created by our partners at Osmo.

Augmented Reality colouring - Combining pen and paper with our tablets to create drawing that come to life!
