Flowers to Fibre Exhibition opening

  • The National Museum of Computing Block H, Bletchley Park Bletchley, England, MK3 6GX United Kingdom (map)

A New Gallery Exhibition opening- Flowers to Fibre

Britain’s high-speed communications future - a history.

Flowers to Fibre will be delivered through special exhibits, interactive experiences, and displays hosted at The National Museum of Computing. A wonderful Collaboration with the Communications Museum Trust.

It will also capture the day-to-day experiences of the people involved in this story for future generations.

Why now? This special year - not simply two years before BT turns off that faithful copper network, it also marks three additional milestones:

75th anniversary Tommy Flowers starting his pioneering work.

55 years since two pilot experiments in London that first delivered Flowers’ vision for the digital phone exchange.

33 years since Britain’s long-distance phone trunk went fully digital, introducing phone services now considered the gold standard for the industry.

About

The Communications Museum Trust Ltd is a non-profit charitable company limited by guarantee. The board of directors (trustees) is elected each year by our members. Membership is open to any individual as well as organisations. The founders have extensive experience of working with various museums across the UK with significant communications & computing exhibits who have come together to lay the future for telecoms history preservation in the UK recognising that there was a need for a more formal central body to co-ordinate the collections which are geographically dispersed and ensure that technical skills and knowledge to keep these exhibits working are not lost for future generations. We plan to register with the Charity Commission once our income goes above the minimum threshold which is required to be eligible for registered charity status. We are also working longer term towards Accredited Museum status.
