The National Museum of Computing announces its summer holiday STEM Bytes Festival programme

The perfect family summer day out – an unmissable opportunity for families at the home of the world’s largest collection of historic computers.

Bletchley, 2nd August 2022 - The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) invites families to get involved in its Summer STEM Bytes Festival, an exciting and unique celebration of all things computing. Running for over 6 weeks from Tuesday 26th July until Sunday 4th September, the festival offers a fantastic opportunity for kids to get hands-on experience in a diverse selection of computational delights.

TNMOC is the home of the world’s most extensive collection of working historic computers, and a ticket to the STEM Bytes Festival also gives you access to all the museum’s unique exhibits charting the history of computing at no extra cost!

Our STEM Ambassadors and volunteers bring decades of experience and buckets of enthusiasm for STEM to the festival, with many having operated at the cutting edge of technology. There is no better group to learn from and no place better to learn! Some of the activities on offer include:

  • Learning how to program in languages like Scratch and Python on the iconic Raspberry Pi mini-computer

  • Practicing coding with Microsoft Makecode’s engaging platform

  • Building an understanding of how software and hardware work together using the revolutionary BBC Micro:bit system

  • Developing creativity, innovation, collaboration and problem-solving skills within the Minecraft Education Edition’s immersive digital environment

People of all ages will leave the museum with memories of an amazing experience, their passion for technology nurtured and their technological skills improved tangibly.

Jacqui Garrad, museum director, said: “The STEM Bytes Festival is the perfect way for families to spend a day out in the holidays, having fun while learning. We are delighted to be able to offer such a comprehensive programme and cannot wait to see as many people at the museum as possible!”

About The National Museum of Computing

Located on Bletchley Park as an independent museum, The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) brings to life the history and ongoing development of computing for the inspiration and enjoyment of both the general public and computing enthusiasts.

TNMOC acquires, conserves, restores, and rebuilds historic computing machinery and related artefacts. The museum displays and interprets its exhibits to tell the history of modern computing, with a particular emphasis on British contributions. Many of the exhibits are maintained in working condition and regularly demonstrated, including the Turing-Welchman Bombe and Colossus code breaking machines from WWII, the Harwell Dekatron Computer, the world’s oldest still working original computer dating from 1951, mainframe computers and minicomputers from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, through home and personal computers of the 90s, to modern tablet computers and smartphones.

The museum runs a highly successful Sandford Awarded learning programme for schools and colleges that introduces computing technology and coding to young people, to help inspire the next generation of computer scientists and engineers. It also runs a popular ongoing programme of hands-on activities during school holidays, offers lectures and interactive events, both on site and via remote Internet access.
